ABOUT WAYANAD

A District Unlike Any Other

Aerial view of Western Ghats valley, river and plantations, Wayanad
🌿 The Land

Wayanad sits high in the Western Ghats of northern Kerala, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — one of the world's 18 biodiversity hotspots. This is coffee country, spice country, tea country. Dense shola forests give way to terraced hillsides carpeted in cardamom and pepper. Rivers cut through valleys lined with bamboo groves. The air genuinely smells different here.

🏹 Ancient People

The district is deeply layered in history. Wayanad's indigenous Adivasi communities — the Kurichya, Kuruma and Paniya among others — have lived in these forests for millennia. Their heritage is woven into the landscape: in cave paintings older than the Egyptian pyramids, in temples that predate written records, in the rhythms of a place that still operates on its own unhurried clock.

Pazhassi Raja, the Lion of Kerala, in the Wayanad forests
⚔️ Pazhassi Raja

Wayanad's forests were the last refuge of Pazhassi Raja — the "Lion of Kerala" — who waged one of the earliest armed resistances against British colonial rule in the late 18th century. He used the dense Western Ghats terrain to evade capture for years, and his legend is deeply woven into the identity of this land. The forests around Tholpetty and Mananthavady were his strongholds.

This guide covers everything worth visiting, with honest distances and practical tips.

Don't skip the Thattukadas

Wayanad's roadside food stalls — known as thattukadas — are where the real eating happens. Open from late afternoon into the night, they serve Kerala's most authentic street food: fresh porotta with beef curry, killikoodu, grilled fish and black tea that's been simmering since morning. No menus, no frills, and almost always better than the nearest restaurant.

PRACTICAL INFO

Essential Travel Tips

Everything you need to know before you arrive — from mobile networks to emergency numbers.

📱

Mobile Networks

Jio offers the best coverage, including remote forest areas. Airtel works well in towns but can be patchy in deep forest. BSNL is often the only signal in very remote zones. If visiting from abroad, pick up a Jio Tourist SIM at the airport — ₹300–600 for 28 days unlimited data.

💰

Money & ATMs

Carry cash — ATMs are sparse in remote areas. SBI, Federal Bank and Canara Bank ATMs are available in Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta. UPI (Google Pay/PhonePe) is widely accepted. International cards work in town ATMs.

🏥

Medical & Safety

St. Joseph's Mission Hospital and Mananthavady Government Hospital are the nearest 24-hour facilities. MIMS Hospital, Kannur (110 km) for serious emergencies. Daytime pharmacies: Athulya Medicals & Grace Medicals in Thalappuzha. Late-night: Veenus Pharmacy, Mananthavady (24 hrs). Carry insect repellent and basic first aid for forest treks.

🎒

What to Pack

Light breathable layers (mornings are cool year-round). Waterproof jacket essential June–September. Closed walking shoes for trekking. Sunscreen. Insect repellent. Cash ₹5,000+ if venturing into rural areas. Power bank (some estate areas have patchy power).

🗣️

Language & Culture

Malayalam is the primary language. English understood in tourist areas. Useful phrases: Namaskaram (hello) · Nanni (thank you) · Ethra aanu? (how much?) · Evideyaanu? (where is?). Dress modestly at temples. Always ask before photographing people.

Dos & Don'ts

Do: Book safaris in advance · Carry cash · Respect wildlife corridors · Dress modestly at temples · Try the local food.
Don't: Feed wildlife · Litter · Venture into forest after dark · Honk in wildlife zones.

🛍️

Shopping & Souvenirs

Wayanad Spices — buy black pepper, cardamom, cloves and vanilla direct from local shops in Mananthavady for the best quality and price. Forest Honey & Eucalyptus Oil — available at local markets and the Honey Museum; both are pure, medicinal quality. Bamboo Crafts & Organic Soaps — pick up handmade pieces from Uravu Bamboo Village or En Ooru, supporting local artisans directly.

Fuel & Nearby Services

Nearest Fuel: IndianOil petrol station in Thalappuzha (open 6 AM–10 PM). Nearest ATMs: SBI ATMs near Government Engineering College, Mananthavady and in Mananthavady main town. 24-Hour Pharmacy: Veenus Pharmacy, Mananthavady — for late-night emergencies. Always top up fuel before heading into remote forest areas.

FROM THE HOSTS

Ask a Local

The questions guests ask most — answered honestly by Ichumma's hosts at Thalapuzha.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

Start at Banasura Sagar Dam (38 km, about 50 mins) early — it's peaceful before the day-trippers arrive. Then head 5 km north to Kuruva Island for bamboo rafting. Arrive before noon as entry is capped at 488 visitors. On the way back, stop at Thirunelli Temple — the forest drive alone is worth it. That's a genuinely complete day out, and you'll be back at the villa in time for the pool before sunset.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

We strongly advise against it. The roads through the forest corridors — particularly the stretch between Sulthan Bathery and Tholpetty — are active wildlife zones. Elephants cross at night with no warning, and the roads have no lighting. Our rule for guests: be back at the villa by dusk. Plan your days accordingly and you'll have no issues — everything worth seeing is within comfortable driving distance during daylight hours.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

Honestly, quite good — especially October through February. The morning jeep safari at Tholpetty is your best bet; the forest is denser and quieter than Muthanga, and the guides know where the herds move. Muthanga is more accessible but sees more visitors. Book the safari the day before by calling the forest office directly. We've had guests spot wild elephants, gaur, spotted deer and hornbills on a single morning out — it's not guaranteed, but Wayanad delivers more often than people expect.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

We can arrange a reliable local driver for the full duration of your stay — this is what most guests prefer. You get flexibility without the stress of navigating unfamiliar mountain roads. A full-day driver runs around ₹2,500–3,000 and covers 200–250 km comfortably. If you're a confident driver and have a GPS, self-drive works fine on the main roads between attractions. Just avoid driving after dark and keep your fuel tank topped up — there are long gaps between petrol stations on the northern routes toward Thirunelli.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

It's our honest favourite season, and we say that as people who live here. The light is different — everything glows. The estate smells incredible. Waterfalls you'd normally see as thin threads become thundering curtains of white. Yes, it rains heavily and some forest trails close. But sitting on the veranda with a cup of estate coffee while the mist rolls in over the valley — there's nothing quite like it. If you can embrace the rain, September is the sweet spot: the landscape is still lush but the worst of the downpours have eased. And rates are significantly lower.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

The Valliyoorkavu Bharani festival (February/March, 20 km from us) is one of the most atmospheric events in North Wayanad — thousands gather over several days with traditional rituals, elephants, and drumming. Worth experiencing if your dates align. The Wednesday market at Mananthavady town (16 km) is a good slice of local life — spices, forest honey, bamboo goods. For Onam (August–September), the estate itself has traditional celebrations. Tell us when you're coming and we'll let you know what's happening locally during your stay.

🏡 Ichumma's Hosts

3 nights is the sweet spot — it gives you 2 full sightseeing days plus proper time to relax at the estate. You'll cover the major attractions without feeling rushed. 2 nights is doable if you're focused, but you'll wish you had more. 4–5 nights is for those who want to go deep: Chembra Peak, both wildlife sanctuaries, the heritage trail through Sulthan Bathery, and evenings that aren't hurried. We've had guests stay for 2 nights and rebook for longer on the same trip. Wayanad has a way of doing that.
